Whole 30 - First Few Days

Whole 30 Log – Day -3

Today was not an easy day everyone, and the plan doesn’t even start for three more days! I read through a very long textbook that explains the science of why it works and how it’s done (it also has a ton of recipes and cooking techniques). So after fully understanding what I need to avoid, I cleaned out my pretty full pantry, fridge, and freezer. Here’s what was left…

Isn’t that insane?! Almost all of my dry foods, all of the sauces on the fridge door (minus Franks Red Hot), even the Kraft deli meats I had, ALL HAD ADDED SUGAR! It’s not all bad though, I did find a bottle of ranch that was well past it’s expiration date. Hello trash.

Since this meal plan is partially temporary, some of these dry/frozen foods will be kept in the basement for consumption afterwards. But the stuff that will go bad by then…looks like someone is getting a nice free care package.

Whole 30 Log – Day -1

It’s official. It hasn’t even started and I’m already tired of it. I went to Hy-Vee to grab groceries for the next three days’ worth of meals…eating healthy is expensive! Also, where in the heck do you find Ghee?! All jokes aside, I'm pretty excited to get this thing started!

I spent almost 2 hours prepping for the start of this thing. I made my own mayo and ranch dressing, roasted a spaghetti squash, made a homemade tomato sauce, and baked a spinach frittata for breakfast (cast iron skillets are pretty neat). I’m looking forward to trying some of these new foods and recipes.

Whole 30 Log – Day 1

BAM! Time to get rolling. Started breakfast with the spinach frittata I made last night with a side of avocado and an apple. Delicious. Lunch was a spinach and tuna salad with the homemade ranch dressing and a side of strawberries. Dinner tonight was spaghetti squash and organic grass-fed ground beef topped with the homemade tomato sauce, which turned out so dang good. Eating healthy certainly tastes good.

While the prepping takes time, and certainly dirties the kitchen much more, so far it seems worth it. Simply just from the standpoint that the food tastes great.

I haven’t lost weight or gained muscle yet, not sure what is taking so long…maybe the gains will show on day 2.

Whole 30 Log – Day 3

Lunch today! Mexican Tuna Boats! This may be a new go-to lunch meal for me, so good! It only took a few minutes to prepare too. Avocado, canned tuna, green onions, jalapeno, cilantro, lime juice, chili powder, salt and pepper. Mash it all together and scoop it onto lettuce leaves. Easy and delicious.

Whole 30 Log – Day 4

Boy today was rough. I went into this fully thinking “I’ll have no problems with cravings,” but here I am. After working in the hot sun doing yard work, I came in and wanted nothing more than an easy snack; chips, trail mix, peanut butter and jelly sandwich, something! But everything I had to eat needed to be prepped first. Looks like I’ll just starve until dinner.

Whole 30 recommends staying away from snacking and only eat 3 meals a day (4 if you’re an active person). They do this to break the “bad habit” of snacking, especially on unhealthy foods. But thanks to the internet, there are thousands of Whole 30 people that have the need to snack like me. Tomorrow I’ll head back to Hy-Vee and get some Whole 30 approved snackables.

Whole 30 Log – Day 5

Today I bought a rutabaga. A RUTABAGA! I don't even think I know what that is.

Whole 30 Log – Day 6

That rutabaga was totally worth it. Diced that up with other root vegetables (carrots, parsnips, turnips, potatoes and sweet potatoes) and roasted them. I also made a really good Thai Yellow Curry sauce to slather on top of those and some chicken breasts. All healthy, all delicious!

I won't lie and say that it has been easy, but it has been manageable. A little over a week down at this point. With how hot and sunny it has been, it's hard to tell if I feel like I have more energy or not because the sun has been draining me either way! I guess I'll keep it going and see how I feel as time continues.
