Some Tough Love to start your day…
Another great podcast, The Mindset Mentor with Rob Dial, hit me with some great tough love a couple days back. He said two quotes that will be in the front of my mind for a while now (especially during these very strange and unreliable times).
“Everything is your fault”
And he means EVERYTHING! Your failures, and your successes. You cannot control everything that life throws at you, but you can always control how you react to what life throws at you.
If you are struggling with low grades, it’s not because your teachers suck. It’s because you haven’t taken the time to find extra resources to understand the material fully.
If you are unhappy with your job, it’s not because you aren’t getting paid what your worth. It’s because you haven’t taken the steps to prove yourself, move up, or move out, and find the happiness in your career.
If you are tired of getting talked down to from your friends, it’s not because they are mean. It’s because you have conditioned them that it is ok to talk to you like that.
If you are beyond angry that you haven’t gone a best time in over a year, it’s not because of your coach, or your parents, or your teammates, or your other time commitments. It’s because of you!
Understand that everything you want is already out there in the world; the money you want, the happiness you want, the swim times you want. All it takes is for you to understand that you are in control of everything! Your success, and your failures. And start living a life that leads to the successes you seek.
“You are under no obligation to be who you were 5 minutes ago” – Alan Watts
What a great quote. Growing up I’ve thought about this. I went to college at the University of Minnesota where I didn’t know a single soul. I thought to myself, “this is great. I can reinvent myself and be whoever I want to be.” But in reality, I could’ve done that any day I wanted to.
Just because I was a certain way yesterday, doesn’t mean I have to be that way today. Just because I was a certain way this morning, doesn’t mean I have to be that way tonight. Just because I was a certain way a moment ago, doesn’t mean I have to be that way in this moment.
You can change the way you think and act RIGHT NOW!
Will it confuse some people? Probably. Will you feel better? Absolutely. Will it make other people feel better as well? You better believe it.
Own your life. Take responsibility for what happens to you. And start to understand that you are in control. Life isn’t a road trip with you in the passenger seat. Life is a road trip with you in the driver seat, where you get to decide the start date, the scenic routes, every pit stop, and when it all ends!
So suck it up buttercup! Now get out there. Good luck, kick butt, and have fun!
